Archival Overview
Pioneering nineteenth-century composer and violinist who popularized the Viennese waltz worldwide and composed the immortal patriotic 'Radetzky March'.
Biographical Record
Johann Strauss I was born on March 14, 1804, in the Leopoldstadt district of Vienna. Playing viola in Joseph Lanner's dance orchestra, Strauss formed his own ensemble in 1825, touring across Germany, France, and Great Britain to ecstatic audiences, transforming the rustic German Ländler into the refined, intoxicating Viennese waltz.
Appointed Director of Court Balls (Hofball-Musikdirektor) by the Habsburg imperial court in 1835, Strauss composed over 250 works. In 1848, he composed his world-famous Radetzky March, Op. 228, honoring Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz; its rhythmic hand-clapping finale remains the traditional concluding encore of the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert.
