Eminent editor and intellectual whose journal 'Repertorio Americano' served as the undisputed cultural and democratic beacon for Latin American and Caribbean intellectuals for nearly four decades.

Biographical Record

Joaquín García Monge was born on January 20, 1881, in Desamparados. Trained in pedagogy in Chile, he pioneered costumbrista and social realism in Costa Rican prose with novels like El Moto (1900) and Las hijas del campo.

In 1919, García Monge founded the literary and political journal Repertorio Americano, which he edited tirelessly until his death in 1958.
