Traveling extensively through the western highlands of Quetzaltenango and Totonicapán, Castillo transcribed ancient Maya melodies played on traditional reed flutes (chirimías) and tun drums.
His groundbreaking opera 'Quiché Vinak' (The Quiché People) and symphonic suites transformed ancient Mayan ceremonial music into monumental classical orchestral works.
