Biographical Record

Jeppe Jensen, taking the name Jeppe Aakjær from his birthplace, was born in Jutland on September 10, 1866. Experiencing the brutal exploitation of impoverished farmhands firsthand, Aakjær turned literature into a weapon for rural democracy.

His 1904 novel Vredens Børn (The Children of Wrath) exposed the abuse and wretched living quarters of Danish agricultural laborers, sparking official parliamentary investigations and labor reform. His 1906 poetry collection Rugens Sange (Songs of the Rye) gave Denmark its most cherished summer folk songs, celebrating windblown heather, skylarks, and golden grain.
