Archival Overview

Pioneering Haitian physician, ethnologist, diplomat, and intellectual father of the Haitian Indigenist movement, author of 'Ainsi parla l'oncle'.

Biographical Record

Dr. Jean Price-Mars was a seminal Haitian intellectual, physician, and diplomat whose 1928 masterwork 'Ainsi parla l'oncle' (So Spoke the Uncle) catalyzed the Haitian Indigenist movement and influenced the international Négritude renaissance.

Reacting against the cultural elite's eurocentrism during the US military occupation, Price-Mars urged Haitians to embrace their African heritage, traditional folklore, Creole language, and Vodou religion with intellectual pride.

He served as Rector of the State University of Haiti and Ambassador to France, celebrated as the ideological mentor to Aimé Césaire and Léopold Sédar Senghor.
