Archival Overview
President of Haiti from 1818 to 1843 who reunited northern and southern Haiti and unified the entire island of Hispaniola.
Biographical Record
Jean-Pierre Boyer was a Haitian statesman and revolutionary officer who served as President of Haiti for twenty-five years, the longest tenure of any 19th-century Haitian ruler.
Succeeding Alexandre Pétion in 1818, Boyer reunited Haiti following the fall of Henri Christophe's kingdom in 1820, and in 1822 brought Spanish Santo Domingo under Haitian rule, governing the entire island of Hispaniola.
He promulgated the Rural Code of 1826 and in 1825 secured France's formal diplomatic recognition of Haitian independence, albeit under a controversial indemnity agreement.
