Profound Ivorian poet and novelist whose award-winning book 'La carte d'identité' explored colonial cultural dispossession, and who founded the philosophical movement of Bossonism rooted in Akan spirituality.
Biographical Record
Jean-Marie Adiaffi was born on January 1, 1941, in Bettié in eastern Côte d'Ivoire. After studying cinema and literature at the IDHEC and Sorbonne in Paris, Adiaffi emerged as a singular, fiery intellectual voice upon his return home.
In 1980, his novel La carte d'identité won the prestigious Grand Prix Littéraire d'Afrique Noire for its Kafkaesque, intensely poetic narrative of an Akan prince arrested by colonial gendarmes for losing his identification papers. In his later years, Adiaffi articulated 'Bossonism'—a call for Africans to reclaim their indigenous spiritual theology and reject foreign dogmas.
