Biographical Record
Jean-Christian Mboumba, known to Africa as Mackjoss, was born in Mouila on June 15, 1946. Apprenticing with Franco's TP OK Jazz and Tabu Ley Rochereau in Kinshasa, Mackjoss mastered the electric guitar and vocal arrangements of Central African rumba.
In 1971, he was appointed director of the Gabonese military orchestra Massako. Under his visionary leadership, Massako toured across Africa and Europe, modernizing traditional Bapounou and Mitsogo rhythms with brass sections and infectious rumba grooves, producing timeless hits that dominated radio for three decades.
