Archival Overview

Leading realist poet, journalist, and master of the feuilleton whose 1878 collection 'Tales of the Lesser Quarter' immortalized Old Prague, inspiring Chilean poet Pablo Neruda to adopt his surname in homage.

Biographical Record

Jan Neruda was born in the Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana) of Prague on July 9, 1834. Working as a leading columnist for Národní listy, Neruda published over two thousand feuilletons, shaping modern Czech journalistic prose.

His 1878 masterpiece Tales of the Lesser Quarter (Povídky malostranské) observed the eccentricities, gossip, and pathos of cobblestone Prague neighborhoods with brilliant wit and irony. His poetry cycles Cosmic Songs and Ballads and Romances elevated Czech verse; in Chile, young Neftalí Reyes chose 'Pablo Neruda' to honor him.
