Archival Overview

Universal humanist, philosopher, and last bishop of the Unity of the Brethren universally celebrated as the 'Teacher of Nations' (Učitel národů) and father of modern pedagogy, author of 'Didactica Magna'.

Biographical Record

Jan Amos Komenský was born on March 28, 1592, in Moravia. Driven into lifelong European exile following the Habsburg defeat of Protestant Bohemia at the Battle of White Mountain (1620), Comenius wandered through Poland, Sweden, England, and the Netherlands.

His revolutionary educational treatise Didactica Magna (The Great Didactic) and the illustrated textbook Orbis Sensualium Pictus pioneered modern pictorial education, universal schooling for boys and girls of all classes, and learning through sensory experience and play rather than rote memorization.
