Archival Overview
Master Haitian novelist, neurologist, and literary theorist who formulated 'Marvellous Realism', author of 'Compère Général Soleil'.
Biographical Record
Jacques Stephen Alexis was a brilliant novelist, physician, and revolutionary militant whose literary innovations anticipated the Latin American Magical Realism boom.
A leading participant in the 1946 'Revolution of the Five Glorious Days', Alexis studied neurology in Paris before presenting his famous paper on 'Marvellous Realism' at the 1956 First Congress of Black Writers and Artists.
His classic novels, including 'Compère Général Soleil' and 'Les Arbres Musiciens', captured the tragic grandeur of Haitian life. Landing clandestinely in Haiti in April 1961 to oppose the François Duvalier dictatorship, he was captured, tortured, and murdered by the Tonton Macoutes.
