Biographical Record
Iyasu was born on February 4, 1895, the son of Ras Mikael of Wollo and Shoaregga Menelik. Designated crown prince by his grandfather Menelik II in 1909, Lij Iyasu assumed rule in December 1913 upon Menelik's death.
Iyasu championed revolutionary reforms: establishing modern municipal police forces, replacing brutal corporal punishments with civil codes, and building mosques as well as churches to integrate the Muslim populations of Harar, Wollo, and the Ogaden into the imperial structure. Deposed in a palace coup in September 1916, he remained imprisoned until his death in 1935.
