Archival Overview

Acclaimed epic poet of 'The Death of Smail-aga Čengić' and visionary Ban of Croatia ('Ban Pučanin') who modernized public schooling, separated judicial and executive powers, and introduced freedom of the press.

Biographical Record

Ivan Mažuranić was born in Novi Vinodolski on August 11, 1814. A master of classical languages and law, Mažuranić published the greatest epic poem of the Croatian National Revival in 1846: Smrt Smail-age Čengića (The Death of Smail-aga Čengić).

In 1873, he became the first non-noble to be appointed Ban of Croatia ('Ban Pučanin'). During his seven-year rule, he secularized and modernized primary education, founded modern statistical services, instituted trial by jury, and reformed the legal codes, transforming Croatia into a modern European civil state.
