Archival Overview
Congolese lay catechist and agricultural laborer beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1994, who endured months of agony after being flogged for refusing to remove his Carmelite Brown Scapular, forgiving his murderer before dying.
Biographical Record
Isidore Bakanja was born circa 1887 in Mbilankamba. Baptized in 1906 by Trappist missionaries, Bakanja embraced the Catholic faith with radiant devotion, wearing the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and catechizing fellow workers.
Employed as a domestic laborer for a rubber plantation company in Ikili, his Belgian superintendent ordered him to remove the scapular. When Bakanja refused, the agent had him flogged with over a hundred lashes using a nail-tipped elephant-hide whip (chicotte). Left to rot in chains, Bakanja lingered in agony for six months, repeatedly declaring: 'If I see the white man in heaven, I will pray for him.'
