Archival Overview
Iconic vocalist and frontman of 'Os Tubarões' whose electrifying, husky voice and socially conscious coladeiras and mornas provided the musical soundtrack to post-independence Cape Verde.
Biographical Record
Ildo Neves Lobo was born on November 25, 1953, in the salt-mining village of Pedra de Lume on Sal island, the son of famed singer Antoninho Lobo. Joining the band Os Tubarões (The Sharks) in 1973 as lead vocalist, Lobo became the defining musical voice of the young independent nation.
With albums such as Pépé Lopi and Dzer me, Os Tubarões popularized the energetic peasant Funaná and biting political Coladeira worldwide. Despite international acclaim, Lobo famously kept his day job as a port customs inspector in Praia. His solo acoustic albums Nóve d'Amor and Incondicional remain timeless masterpieces of Lusophone music.
