Biographical Record
Ignatius Kangave Musazi was born in 1905 in Timuna, Bulemezi, Luweero District. Educated at King's College Budo and St. Augustine's College in Canterbury, England, he returned to Uganda as a teacher, dedicating his life to liberating peasant cotton and coffee growers from colonial marketing cartels.
Musazi founded the Uganda African Farmers Union in 1947, organizing boycotts that shook colonial economic monopolies. On March 2, 1952, he founded the Uganda National Congress (UNC)—the first nationwide nationalist political party in Uganda—demanding immediate independence and universal suffrage. Exiled and imprisoned multiple times by colonial governors, he is commemorated as a foundational National Hero buried at the National Heroes' Acre in Kololo.
