Father of Caribbean trade unionism who founded the British Guiana Labour Union in 1919.
Biographical Record
Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow was a fearless dockworker, athlete, and labor leader universally honored as the 'Father of Trade Unionism in the Commonwealth Caribbean'.
In 1919, after organizing waterfront strikes in Georgetown against starvation wages, Critchlow founded the British Guiana Labour Union (BGLU), the very first legally registered trade union in the British Empire.
He championed the eight-hour workday, universal adult suffrage, and workers' compensation, commemorated by a towering bronze statue standing proudly in front of Guyana's Parliament Building.
