Biographical Record
Hristo Botev was born on January 6, 1848, in Kalofer, the son of teacher Botyo Petkov. Exiled to Romania for his radical anti-Ottoman political activism, Botev became a central leader of the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee (BRCC), editing militant newspapers and publishing revolutionary poetry of fiery emotional intensity.
During the April Uprising of May 1876, Botev seized the Austro-Hungarian passenger steamship Radetzky on the Danube with 205 armed Bulgarian freedom fighters (cheta), forcing the captain to put them ashore at Kozloduy. Leading his men into the Balkan Mountains, he fell in battle on the slopes of Mount Okolchitsa on June 1, 1876. June 2 is honored nationwide as Botev Day.
