Danish geologist and administrator who founded Greenland's first democratic councils and the national newspaper Atuagagdliutit.
Biographical Record
Hinrich Johannes Rink was a Danish scientist, explorer, and colonial administrator who dedicated his career to empowering the indigenous Inuit population of Greenland.
Conducting pioneering glaciological surveys of the Greenland Ice Sheet, Rink recognized that colonial paternalism threatened Inuit society. In 1857, he established the 'Forstanderskaber' (local municipal councils), introducing representative self-governance to Greenland.
In 1861, he founded 'Atuagagdliutit', the first Greenlandic-language newspaper, and published the collected oral legends of the Inuit, fostering modern Greenlandic literary and national consciousness.
