Archival Overview
Foremost realist novelist of modern Scandinavia and Nobel Prize in Literature laureate (1917) whose sweeping masterwork 'Lucky Per' (Lykke-Per) examined the moral and spiritual dilemmas of technological modern Denmark.
Biographical Record
Henrik Pontoppidan was born into a devout pastor's family in Fredericia on July 24, 1857. Abandoning engineering studies at the Polytechnic Institute to become a writer, Pontoppidan dedicated his sharp, unsentimental prose to dissecting Danish society.
Between 1898 and 1904, he published his eight-volume magnum opus Lykke-Per (Lucky Per), tracing the ambitious engineer Per Sidenius who rejects religious dogma for industrial modernization, only to find peace in solitary self-examination. In 1917, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 'for his authentic descriptions of present-day life in Denmark'.
