Archival Overview
Greenlandic lyricist, painter, and Lutheran pastor who wrote the lyrics for Greenland's national anthem.
Biographical Record
Henrik Lund (known affectionately as Intaleeraq) was a revered Greenlandic lyricist, artist, and priest who played an essential role in early 20th-century national identity.
Educated at the Godthåb Seminary, Lund served remote parishes in East Greenland and South Greenland. In 1912, he composed the stirring patriotic poem 'Nunarput utoqqarsuanngoravit' (Our Country, Who Hast Become So Old), celebrating the dignity and ancient heritage of the Inuit land.
Adopted as Greenland's national anthem upon self-government, Lund's verses remain the definitive poetic expression of Greenlandic patriotism.
