Archival Overview
Inuit dog-sled explorer and hunter who perished heroically during Knud Rasmussen's Second Thule Expedition.
Biographical Record
Hendrik Olsen was an elite Greenlandic dog-sled driver, cartographic guide, and Arctic hunter whose expertise was vital to polar exploration expeditions in the early 20th century.
Selected by Knud Rasmussen and Peter Freuchen for the Second Thule Expedition across the extreme northern ice cap of Greenland in 1916–1917, Olsen ensured the survival of the scientific team through harsh blizzards and starvation.
During a hunting foray to procure food for his starving comrades near Saint George Fjord, Olsen disappeared into the Arctic wilderness, commemorated as a hero of Arctic exploration.
