Biographical Record
Heino Eller was born in Tartu on March 7, 1887. Studying composition under Vasily Kalafati at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Eller returned to Tartu in 1920 to establish an innovative, impressionist-influenced school of instrumental music.
His evocative symphonic poem Koit (Dawn, 1918) and intimate string piece Kodumaine viis (Homeland Melody) captured the misty pine forests and quiet waters of Estonia. Moving to the Tallinn State Conservatory in 1940, Eller was the venerated master who nurtured the genius of Arvo Pärt, Jaan Rääts, and Eduard Tubin.
