Biographical Record
Hans Christian Andersen was born into poverty in Odense on April 2, 1805, the son of a sickly shoemaker and a washerwoman. Arriving in Copenhagen at fourteen with dreams of the theater, he received royal patronage from King Frederick VI to attend grammar school.
In 1835, he published his first booklet of Fairy Tales Told for Children (Eventyr, fortalte for Børn). Rejecting traditional moral didacticism, Andersen infused his tales with poetic empathy for outcasts, exquisite irony, and existential beauty. Stories like The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling transformed children's literature worldwide.
