Biographical Record

Habte Giyorgis Dinagde was born circa 1851 in Jibat of Oromo and Gurage ancestry. Captured in regional conflicts as a youth, his exceptional military acumen earned the personal trust of Emperor Menelik II, who appointed him Fitawrari (Commander of the Vanguard).

Leading the center vanguard at Adwa in 1896, Habte Giyorgis routed the Italian brigade of General Dabormida. Appointed Ethiopia's first official Minister of War in 1907 and Chairman of the Council of Ministers, his absolute incorruptibility, wisdom, and military prestige preserved national stability through turbulent imperial successions until his death in 1926.
