Biographical Record
Guy Tirolien was a prominent Caribbean poet, intellectual, and key contributor to the Négritude literary movement alongside Aimé Césaire and Léopold Sédar Senghor.
Born in Marie-Galante, Tirolien spent World War II in a German prisoner-of-war camp alongside Senghor, forging deep Pan-African literary bonds. His 1943 poem 'Prière d'un petit enfant nègre' (Prayer of a Little Black Child) became a world-renowned anti-colonial classic celebrating African oral rhythms and nature.
His collection 'Balles d'or' cemented his status as one of the most melodic and authentic poetic voices of the French-speaking Caribbean.
