Archival Overview
Supreme military genius and national hero of the 1863–1865 Restoration War who defeated the Spanish Empire to restore Dominican independence, serving as progressive provisional President from 1879 to 1880.
Biographical Record
Gregorio Luperón was born to a humble Afro-Dominican merchant family in Puerto Plata on September 8, 1839. When Pedro Santana treasonously annexed the nation to Spain in 1861, the 24-year-old Luperón joined the armed insurrection.
A natural military genius, Luperón commanded the northern forces in the War of Restoration (1863–1865), outmaneuvering elite Spanish imperial troops through relentless guerrilla mobility and forcing Spanish evacuation. As President (1879–1880), he governed from Puerto Plata, reforming education, establishing telegraphs, and guaranteeing civil liberties.
