Biographical Record
Gerty Archimède was a trailblazing Guadeloupean lawyer, politician, and social activist who shattered historic racial and gender barriers across the French Caribbean.
In 1939, she became the first woman admitted to the Guadeloupe Bar, and in 1946 she was elected as a Deputy to the French National Assembly, advocating tirelessly for social security expansion, maternity rights, and workers' pensions in overseas departments.
In 1969, she famously provided legal protection and sanctuary to American civil rights activist Angela Davis when she was detained by French customs in Pointe-à-Pitre.
