Biographical Record
Germain Mba was born in Woleu-Ntem on December 15, 1932. Graduating with highest honors from the Institut d'Études Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris, Mba was one of the most intellectually brilliant young African diplomats of the independence era.
Appointed Secretary-General of the Union Africaine et Malgache (UAM) at age twenty-nine, Mba resigned in protest over the 1964 French military intervention in Gabon, founding the opposition movement MNLG from exile in Algiers. Returning to diplomacy as Ambassador to Japan in 1969, he was ambushed and assassinated in his car in Libreville on September 17, 1971, by foreign mercenary operatives.
