Archival Overview
Visionary liberal statesman and general who introduced commercial coffee cultivation to El Salvador, secularized public education, modernized civil infrastructure, and died heroically before a firing squad in 1865.
Biographical Record
José Gerardo Barrios was born on September 24, 1813, in Cacahuatique. A devoted disciple and cavalry officer under Francisco Morazán, Barrios fought across Central America defending the federal union.
Assuming the presidency of El Salvador in 1859, Barrios initiated profound transformations: introducing large-scale coffee farming that became the backbone of the economy, establishing secular teacher colleges, and modernizing San Salvador. Ousted by a conservative invasion led by Guatemalan dictator Rafael Carrera, Barrios was captured and executed by firing squad on August 29, 1865, facing the rifles with unyielding calm.
