Archival Overview
Foundational strategist, scholar, and writer who unified the Bulgarian national liberation movement and organized the First Bulgarian Legion in Belgrade in 1862.
Biographical Record
Sabi Stoykov Popovich, known as Georgi Sava Rakovski, was born in Kotel in 1821. Educated in Istanbul, Athens, and France, Rakovski mastered six languages, combining romantic historical scholarship with radical anti-imperial insurgency.
In 1862, he organized the First Bulgarian Legion in Belgrade to fight alongside Serbian troops against the Ottoman garrison, training a cadre of young revolutionaries including Vasil Levski. His fiery 1857 poem The Forest Traveler (Gorski Patnik) and ethnographic treatises provided the ideological blueprint for armed national uprising. He died of tuberculosis in Bucharest in 1867; his remains were triumphantly repatriated to Kotel.
