Archival Overview
Supreme sixteenth-century poet and philosopher of Azerbaijani literature whose heartbreaking poetic masterpiece 'Dâstân-ı Leylî vü Mecnûn' codified the Azerbaijani literary language.
Biographical Record
Muhammad bin Suleyman, universally known by his pen name Fuzuli, was born circa 1494 in Karbala into the Bayat tribe of Oghuz Turks. Highly educated in Islamic theology, philosophy, astronomy, and classical literature, Fuzuli mastered Azerbaijani, Arabic, and Persian, composing sublime divans in all three languages.
His 1536 Azerbaijani verse romance Leyli and Majnun is revered as the undisputed crown jewel of Turkic romantic poetry, exploring mystical Sufi ecstasy through the allegorical longing of earthly lovers. Fuzuli's ghazals set the aesthetic gold standard for Azerbaijani lyrical poetry for over four centuries.
