Archival Overview
Foundational patriarch of Estonian literature revered as 'Lauluisa' (Father of Song) who practiced medicine for forty years in Võru while compiling the monumental national epic 'Kalevipoeg' (1857–1861).
Biographical Record
Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald was born on December 26, 1803, to serf parents on the Jõepere estate. Overcoming extreme poverty, Kreutzwald graduated in medicine from the University of Tartu, serving as city physician in Võru for four decades.
Encouraged by Friedrich Robert Faehlmann, Kreutzwald spent decades collecting oral runic songs, weaving them into the monumental 20-canto national epic Kalevipoeg (The Son of Kalev), published between 1857 and 1861. Ending with the prophecy that Kalevipoeg will return to bring freedom, the epic gave Estonia a world-class literary monument.
