Biographical Record
Francisco del Rosario Sánchez was born in Santo Domingo on March 9, 1817. Taking leadership of La Trinitaria while Duarte was forced into foreign exile, Sánchez organized the final revolutionary conspiracy alongside Matías Ramón Mella.
On the historic night of February 27, 1844, at the Puerta del Conde gate, Sánchez proclaimed Dominican independence and raised the national flag. When dictator Pedro Santana treasonously annexed the republic back to Spain in 1861, Sánchez invaded from Haiti to restore sovereignty. Captured in an ambush, he was shot by firing squad on July 4, 1861.
