Biographical Record
Foday Kaba Dumbuya was a prominent Mandinka warrior, military commander, and Islamic leader who fought fiercely against British and French imperial encroachment throughout the late 19th century.
Operating across the Casamance and Gambian borders, Dumbuya established fortified settlements (tatas) and led defensive campaigns against colonial punitive expeditions for over three decades, resisting foreign taxation and protectorate treaties.
He died in battle defending his stronghold at Medina in 1901 during a coordinated joint Anglo-French military siege, remembered as an enduring symbol of anti-colonial defiance.
