Archival Overview
Preeminent Austrian painter of the Biedermeier period whose dazzling portraits and sunlit landscapes pioneered open-air naturalism and rebelled against academic rigidity.
Biographical Record
Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller was born on January 15, 1793, in Vienna. After studying briefly at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, he worked as a portrait miniaturist and theater set painter before becoming Professor of Painting and custodian of the Picture Gallery at the Vienna Academy in 1829.
Waldmüller broke with sterile neoclassical conventions, advocating direct observation of nature in brilliant sunlight (en plein air), anticipating Impressionism. Masterpieces such as Early Spring in the Vienna Woods and The Expected One showcased his luminous handling of light, flora, and peasant life. His outspoken criticism of conservative academic teaching led to his forced retirement in 1857.
