Biographical Record
Félix Varela was born in Havana on November 20, 1788. Appointed professor of philosophy at the San Carlos Seminary, Father Varela revolutionized teaching by replacing scholasticism with modern experimental science and vernacular Spanish.
Elected to the Spanish Cortes in 1821, he boldly proposed the abolition of slavery in Cuba and autonomy for the Spanish colonies. Sentenced to death following the absolutist restoration, Varela fled to New York, where he published El Habanero advocating complete Cuban independence. His remains rest in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana.
