Archival Overview
Pioneering Haitian poet and playwright who elevated Haitian Creole into a respected literary language, author of 'Antigòn'.
Biographical Record
Félix Morisseau-Leroy was a revolutionary educator, dramatist, and poet who fought tirelessly to have Haitian Creole recognized as an official national literary medium.
In 1953, he made history by staging 'Antigòn', his adaptation of Sophocles' Antigone entirely in Haitian Creole, demonstrating the language's supreme poetic beauty and tragic depth. Forced into exile by the Duvalier regime, he spent decades in Senegal and Ghana promoting post-colonial African theater and literacy.
His pioneering Creole poetry collection 'Dyakout' established modern Creole verse, cementing his status as the father of modern Haitian Creole literature.
