Biographical Record
Agustín Farabundo Martí was born on May 5, 1893, in Teotepeque. Abandoning his law studies at the University of El Salvador, Martí dedicated his life to fighting military oligarchies and imperialist exploitation.
In 1928, he traveled to the mountains of Las Segovias in Nicaragua, serving as colonel and secretary to guerrilla general Augusto C. Sandino. Returning to El Salvador, he organized coffee laborers and co-founded the Communist Party. Arrested days before the January 1932 peasant uprising, he was sentenced by a military court and shot on February 1, 1932, his name becoming the symbol of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN).
