Heroic nineteen-year-old Cypriot poet and EOKA freedom fighter executed by hanging by British colonial authorities in 1957, whose farewell letter and patriotic poems became eternal symbols of Cypriot freedom.
Biographical Record
Evagoras Pallikarides was born in Tsada, Paphos, on February 27, 1938. At age fifteen during Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, Pallikarides tore down the Union Jack from Paphos town hall, igniting youth anti-colonial resistance.
Joining the EOKA guerrilla movement in the Troodos mountains, he composed touching romantic and patriotic verse. Captured carrying an unloaded submachine gun in December 1956, he refused to beg for imperial clemency. Despite international appeals, British governor Harding ordered his hanging on March 14, 1957; he was the youngest martyr of the struggle.
