Biographical Record
Etzer Vilaire was one of Haiti's most refined classical poets, judges, and philosophical thinkers, leading the influential 'Génération de la Ronde' literary movement at the turn of the 20th century.
Hailing from Jérémie (known as the 'City of Poets'), Vilaire's poetry collection 'Poèmes d'Amour, d'Orgueil et de Douleur' and the epic 'Les Dix Hommes Noirs' explored metaphysical anguish, moral duty, and existential sorrow.
In 1912, he was awarded a prestigious prize by the Académie Française in Paris, establishing his reputation as a master of French classical poetic form in the Americas.
