Biographical Record

Dr. Esther Afua Ocloo (née Nkulenu) was a visionary Ghanaian industrialist and pioneer of micro-lending who revolutionized female economic empowerment in Africa and the developing world.

Starting with less than a dollar in colonial Gold Coast by selling homemade marmalade and fruit juices, she founded Nkulenu Industries, creating Ghana's first indigenous food processing factory.

In 1979, she co-founded Women's World Banking, serving as its first board chair and providing micro-loans and business training to millions of low-income female entrepreneurs across the globe.
