Archival Overview
Aristocratic symbolist poet of the 'Generación Decapitada' whose delicate 1922 collection 'Romanza de las horas' and haunting sonnet 'Emoción vesperal' epitomized the elegant, fatalistic twilight of Andean Modernism.
Biographical Record
Ernesto Noboa y Caamaño was born on August 2, 1891, into an illustrious political family in Guayaquil. Suffering from lifelong nervous frailty and existential despondency, Noboa sought solace in European literature, traveling across Spain and France.
Returning to Quito, he published Romanza de las horas in 1922, containing immortal modern sonnets like 'Emoción vesperal'. Living a reclusive life consumed by absinthe and neurosis, he died in 1927 at thirty-six, completing the tragic roster of Ecuador's four Decapitated Poets who perished young.
