Biographical Record

Erik Gustaf Melartin was born in Käkisalmi on the shores of Lake Ladoga on February 7, 1875. Studying under Martin Wegelius in Helsinki and Robert Fuchs in Vienna, Melartin possessed extraordinary lyrical warmth and Mahlerian orchestral ambition.

He composed six grand symphonies, the symbolist opera Aino (1909), and his famous Festive March from Sleeping Beauty, which remains the premier wedding march in Finland. As director of the Helsinki Conservatory from 1911 to 1936, he transformed the institution into an international music academy, championing theosophy, modernism, and visual art.
