Biographical Record

Sir Eric Matthew Gairy was a flamboyant and influential trade union leader and statesman who served as the first Prime Minister of Grenada from 1974 to 1979.

Founding the Grenada Manual, Maritime, and Intellectual Workers' Union (GMMIWU) in 1950, Gairy organized the massive 1951 general strike that secured higher wages and political franchise for agricultural workers, challenging the white planter elite.

He founded the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) and successfully negotiated Grenada's full independence from the United Kingdom in 1974 before his government was overthrown by the New Jewel Movement in 1979.
