Early anti-colonial hero and plantation laborer leader who organized the underground Cruzada Nacional de Liberación to demand independence from Spain, assassinated by colonial authorities in 1949.
Biographical Record
Enrique Nvó Okenve was born in Micomeseng in the continental forest region of Río Muni circa 1909. Experiencing the harsh racial subjugation and forced labor regimes on colonial coffee and timber plantations, Nvó founded clandestine anti-colonial discussion circles in the 1940s.
Alongside Acacio Mañé Ela, he formed the underground Cruzada Nacional de Liberación de Guinea Ecuatorial, seeking international solidarity from the United Nations and neighboring French Cameroon. Betrayed to the Spanish colonial secret police, Nvó was assassinated in November 1949, remembered as the earliest martyr of national independence.
