Archival Overview
Master storyteller revered as the 'Singer of the Bulgarian Village', whose humorous and tragic tales (including 'The Gerak Family' and 'Under the Monastery Vine') captured the heart and humor of the peasantry.
Biographical Record
Dimitar Ivanov Stoyanov, adopting the pen name Elin Pelin ('Wormwood'), was born on July 18, 1877, in the village of Baylovo. Working as a rural teacher and later as curator of the Ivan Vazov Museum and librarian, Elin Pelin was a close companion of King Boris III and artist colleagues.
With unmatched psychological acuity and earthy peasant humor, he documented the life of the Shop peasants in stories such as 'Windmill' and 'Andreshko'. His 1911 novella The Gerak Family (Geratsite) remains the classic study of patriarchal village decline, while his philosophical cycle Under the Monastery Vine examined human nature and moral hypocrisy with gentle wisdom. The town of Elin Pelin is named in his honor.
