Archival Overview
Brilliant realist painter of the Golden Age whose unvarnished depictions of modern female independence ('After Breakfast') and luminous Tuscan and Åland plein-air canvases broke Victorian conventions.
Biographical Record
Elin Kleopatra Danielson was born in Noormarkku on September 3, 1861. Graduating from the Finnish Art Society Drawing School at age nineteen, she studied in Paris under Gustave Courtois, joining the famous Önningeby Artists' Colony on the Åland Islands.
Her 1890 masterpiece After Breakfast (Aamiaisen jälkeen), showing a young woman smoking a cigarette casually at an uncleaned breakfast table, shocked conservative critics with its bold realist modernity. Moving to Tuscany after marrying Italian painter Raffaello Gambogi, she painted luminous Mediterranean light and Italian peasants until her death in 1919.
