"My life belongs to me, but the national treasure belongs to eternity and the Georgian nation."

Archival Overview

Georgian historian, archaeologist, and saint who safeguarded Georgia's national museum treasures in European exile for twenty-three years.

Biographical Record

Ekvtime Takaishvili was a revered Georgian archaeologist, historian, and academician, canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church as 'Ekvtime the Man of God'.

A co-founder of Tbilisi State University, Takaishvili was entrusted in 1921 with evacuating Georgia's priceless gold, enamel, and manuscript treasures to France to protect them from foreign looting.

Living in extreme poverty and defying Nazi pressures during World War II, Takaishvili guarded every single artifact without selling a piece, returning the complete national treasury intact to Georgia in 1945.
