Archival Overview
Guatemalan polymath, architect, sculptor, and painter who designed the Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias.
Biographical Record
Efraín Enrique Recinos Valenzuela was a visionary architect, sculptor, and painter whose monumental public structures define the urban skyline of modern Guatemala City.
An Olympic athlete and acoustic engineer, Recinos' greatest triumph was designing the monumental Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias (Guatemala's National Theatre), shaped like a jaguar resting upon an ancient Mayan pyramid.
His dynamic, multi-layered concrete murals and kinetic sculptures at the National Mortgage Bank and National Library celebrated Guatemalan history with exuberant creative ingenuity.
